Legacy of Dhallywood Icon Jasim Remembered on His Birth Anniversary

The Bangladeshi film industry is commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary actor and freedom fighter Abul Khair Jashim Uddin, popularly known as Jashim, who was born on August 14, 1945, in Nawabganj, Dhaka. An iconic figure in Dhallywood, Jashim is remembered not only for his prolific two-decade acting career and successful transition from antagonist to hero but also for his pivotal role in discovering contemporary star Riaz.

Jashim began his cinematic journey in 1972 with the film “Debor.” He gained widespread acclaim the following year as an action director for “Rangbaaz” and later rose to fame for his portrayal of the character Gaffar in “Dost Dushman,” an adaptation of the Indian classic “Sholay.” His performance in the film was so compelling that it reportedly drew praise from the late Bollywood actor Amjad Khan, who played the iconic Gabbar Singh.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jashim was a veteran of the 1971 Liberation War, having served in Sector 2 under the command of Major Haider. Throughout his career, which spanned over 200 films, Jashim became a symbol of resistance for the underprivileged. Notable films in his repertoire include “Ek Mutho Bhat,” “Protigga,” “Sobuj Sathi,” “Laily Majnu,” “Johnny,” “Surrender,” “Lalu Mastan,” and “Swami Keno Asami.” In recognition of his enduring legacy, a studio floor at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) has been named “Jashim Floor.”

Jashim’s contribution to cinema extended to talent scouting, most notably his discovery of actor Riaz. In 1994, while Riaz was visiting the BFDC with his cousin, actress Bobita, Jashim spotted the young man and encouraged him to pursue acting. Despite Riaz having no prior experience, Jashim mentored him in acting and action techniques. Riaz eventually made his debut alongside Jashim in the 1995 film “Banglar Nayok.” Riaz has frequently credited Jashim for his successful career, noting that the legendary actor often prioritized training him in fight choreography even during his own busy shooting schedules.

The legendary actor passed away on October 8, 1998, at the age of 53, due to a brain hemorrhage. He was survived by his wife, Nasrin, and their three sons, Ratul, Rahul, and Sami, all of whom are involved in the music industry. As the nation observes his birthday, industry peers and fans continue to honor Jashim as both a pioneer of action cinema and a mentor who shaped the future of Dhallywood.
