Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman Returns After Inspecting UN Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan and Abyei

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman returned to the country on Friday following a five-day official visit to assess United Nations peacekeeping mission areas in South Sudan and Abyei.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate confirmed the return, stating that the Army Chief inspected the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
During his tour, General Waker-Uz-Zaman visited the Bangladesh Army’s engineer company and infantry battalion, as well as the Bangladesh Navy’s Force Marine Unit stationed in South Sudan. In Abyei, he reviewed the operations of the Bangladesh Army’s infantry battalion. He urged all deployed personnel to maintain the highest levels of vigilance, professionalism, discipline, and dedication in the execution of their duties.
The Army Chief held formal meetings with Bangladeshi staff officers, observers, and contingent members to discuss mission status and operational activities. Furthermore, he conducted separate consultations with the Force Commanders of both missions, as well as the mission leadership team and national monitors in Abyei, to review security conditions and operational challenges.
As part of his diplomatic engagements, General Waker-Uz-Zaman met with the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Defense Forces of South Sudan. Upon his arrival at the defense headquarters, he was accorded a guard of honor by the South Sudanese military.
The ISPR stated that the visit is expected to bolster the morale of Bangladeshi peacekeepers and strengthen bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh, the host nations, and the United Nations. Officials expressed optimism that the visit would facilitate the expansion of Bangladesh’s role in international peacekeeping operations.
