From Office Assistant to Drug Discovery Researcher: Ashutosh Nath Joins University of Houston After Completing PhD in the United States

Ashutosh Nath, a researcher from a remote village in Bangladesh, has reached a significant career milestone by securing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Houston’s College of Pharmacy. Having recently completed his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Boston, Nath is now set to transition into the field of medicinal chemistry, where he will focus on the research and development of novel pharmaceutical drugs.

Born in a modest family in Fatikchhari, Chittagong, Nath’s journey was defined by persistent financial hardship. His family later relocated to Manikchhari in Khagrachhari, where they struggled to maintain a livelihood. Despite being the youngest of five siblings, Nath was the only one to pursue higher education, heavily supported by his elder brother, Paritosh Nath, who worked as a tailor to fund his studies.

Nath’s academic path was interspersed with employment to support his education and his family. While pursuing his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College in Chittagong, he worked at a computer shop in the city’s Chawkbazar area. In 2016, he began working as an office assistant cum computer operator at the Attorney General’s office in Dhaka, often balancing his duties with freelance computer work to make ends meet.

His research potential emerged during his master’s studies at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), which he completed in 2019. It was during this period that his work began appearing in international academic journals, providing the foundation for his acceptance into the doctoral program at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2021 with a full scholarship.

Under the supervision of Professor Wei Zhang, Nath’s PhD research focused on developing efficient methodologies for synthesizing complex polyheterocyclic molecules. His work extended beyond his home institution, including collaborations with researchers at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital on small-molecule-based and precision vaccine development.

Reflecting on his experiences, Nath credits his academic journey with teaching him resilience, problem-solving, and the ability to persevere through failures inherent in scientific experimentation. As he moves to the laboratory of Professor Greg Cuny at the University of Houston, Nath plans to integrate synthetic organic chemistry with medicinal chemistry and artificial intelligence. His long-term goal remains to contribute to the discovery and development of effective new therapeutic drugs for human healthcare.
