Chief Prosecutor seeks maximum penalty for Obeidul Quader and six others in July uprising crimes case

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Aminul Islam, has demanded the maximum sentence for seven individuals, including former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, for crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
During the sixth day of arguments at International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday, the prosecution concluded its case by calling for the highest penalty. Chief Prosecutor Islam stated that such individuals should never again emerge in the country’s political landscape, emphasizing that no one should be permitted to justify atrocities under the guise of a popular mandate.
The other accused in the case include former Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad A. Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan, and the president and general secretary of the now-prohibited Chhatra League, Saddam Hossain and Sheikh Wali Asif, respectively. All seven defendants remain at large.
In his concluding arguments, Chief Prosecutor Islam asserted that all the defendants bear individual responsibility for the crimes committed during the uprising. Furthermore, he argued that the accused hold “superior command responsibility” for the systemic violence.
The Chief Prosecutor specifically noted that Obaidul Quader, in his capacity as the General Secretary of the Awami League, not only failed to prevent the crimes but actively issued directives to kill. Islam stated that Quader was fully aware of the lethal consequences of his orders.
The prosecution characterized the crimes as grave, holding the defendants accountable for the deaths of thousands and severe injuries to approximately 35,000 individuals. Maintaining that the charges have been substantiated, the Chief Prosecutor insisted that the defendants deserve no leniency and should face exemplary punishment.
