Dhaka Police Arrest Serial Fraudster Impersonating Military Officers and Four Suspected Armed Robbers in Separate Operations

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has arrested 40-year-old Md. Nurul Chowdhury for allegedly defrauding individuals by impersonating senior military, police, and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials to promise them non-existent government jobs.
A team from the DB’s Ramna division apprehended the suspect at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday at the Sunday Society residential complex located on Bhuiyabari Bashtala Road in Uttara.
During a press briefing held at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road on Tuesday afternoon, Additional Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest. Authorities recovered a cache of incriminating items from Chowdhury, including two walkie-talkies with chargers, a fraudulent passport, forged identification cards identifying him as a Major in the Army and a Colonel in RAB, and ten sets of military uniforms. Officers also seized medical booklets, recruitment pads, fake job application forms, and photographs of the suspect dressed in various military and police uniforms.
According to investigators, Chowdhury targeted unemployed youths, rickshaw pullers, laborers, and daily wage earners. He operated under multiple aliases, including Major Al Mamun, Colonel Nazim, Major Tanvir, and Superintendent of Police Tariqur Rahman. The suspect reportedly used these fake identities and forged documentation to build credibility and solicit money from victims under the guise of securing positions as soldiers, cooks, or office assistants. A case has already been filed against the suspect at the Shah Ali Police Station, and law enforcement is currently searching for his accomplices.
In a separate operation, the DB’s Gulshan division arrested four members of an armed robbery gang while they were preparing to raid a residence near Hatirjheel in the capital on Tuesday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Rakib, 32, Rashedul Hawladar, 27, Jubayer Islam, 40, and Bijoy Sarker, also known as Defid, 27.
Police recovered two foreign pistols, two magazines, five rounds of ammunition, a toy pistol, three machetes, five crude bombs, a spike dagger, and two film shooting unit identity cards from the suspects. Additional Commissioner Islam stated that intelligence reports suggested the six-member gang had scouted the location the previous day to plan a theft of gold and other valuables. While four suspects were taken into custody, two others managed to evade capture.
