Satkhira National Citizens Party Leaders Threaten Mass Resignation Over New Committee Formation

SATKHIRA — A faction of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Satkhira has rejected the newly formed district convening committee, labeling the process as opaque and one-sided. Disgruntled party members have issued an ultimatum, threatening mass resignations from their respective organizational posts if the committee is not reconstituted within 72 hours.

The internal dissent surfaced during a press conference held at the Al-Baraka Hotel in the Satkhira New Market area on Monday evening. Shortly thereafter, the district wing of Jatiya Chatra Shakti, the party’s student affiliate, held a separate event at the same venue to formally denounce the new leadership structure.

The 15-member committee, approved for a six-month tenure, was announced on Sunday. The appointment was formalised in a letter signed by the party’s central member secretary, Akhtar Hossain, and the chief organizer for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah. The committee is led by convener Principal Md. Akhtaruzzaman, with Md. Kamruzzaman (Bulu) serving as member secretary and Akhtarul Islam as organizing secretary. The leadership also includes S.M. Rajab Ali as senior joint convener, alongside joint conveners C.M. Nazmul Islam and Sheikh Nazmul Huda.

Protesting members argued that the selection process disregarded the contributions of long-standing activists who maintained the party’s presence in the district despite the absence of a formal committee. They asserted that their opposition is directed at the flawed organizational process rather than specific individuals.

Md. Kamruzzaman, who was named the new member secretary, confirmed during the press conference that he would resign from all his organizational positions if the committee is not restructured within the three-day deadline. He emphasized that the protest represents a broader dissatisfaction, claiming that a significant portion of the affiliated student and worker wings are prepared to withdraw from party activities.

Echoing these concerns, Jatiya Chatra Shakti district member secretary Bakhtiar Hossain criticized the new committee as a “pocket committee” that fails to reflect the aspirations of the July mass uprising, claiming it sidelines genuine activists.

In response, district convener Principal Md. Akhtaruzzaman dismissed the allegations, suggesting that the backlash stems from personal grievances regarding position assignments. He stated that the central leadership evaluated candidates based on their consistent contributions to past movements, including the 2018 quota reform protests and the subsequent anti-discrimination student movement. Akhtaruzzaman maintained that he intends to focus on his administrative duties and noted that any further disputes regarding the committee’s legitimacy must be addressed by the central party leadership.
