International Crimes Tribunal Orders Arrest of Ziaul Ahsan and Tareq Sayeed Mohammad in Enforced Disappearance and Murder Cases

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Monday formally arrested retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan and dismissed Lieutenant Colonel Tareq Sayeed Mohammad in connection with two separate cases involving crimes against humanity committed during the tenure of the Awami League government.

Tribunal prosecutor Shaikh Mahdee confirmed that the two former officials were produced before the court in a case regarding the enforced disappearance of Saiful Islam, a former Member of Parliament for Comilla and president of the Laksam Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and Humayun Kabir, the president of the Laksam municipal branch of the BNP. Neither victim has been located since their disappearance.

In a separate proceeding, the tribunal ordered the arrest and detention of Ziaul Ahsan and Tareq Sayeed Mohammad in connection with a second case involving the extrajudicial killings of Jubo Dal leaders Asaduzzaman Babul, Abdul Mannan, and Zahirul Islam Suman, as well as the enforced disappearance of BNP activist Bellal Hossain.

Following the tribunal’s orders, both suspects were remanded into custody. These legal proceedings mark a significant step in the ongoing judicial inquiry into allegations of state-sanctioned abuses during the previous administration.
