Prominent playwright Ramendu Majumdar turns 85 as family members share personal reflections on his legacy

Renowned theater personality Ramendu Majumdar celebrated his 85th birthday yesterday, marking the occasion with a commemorative event held at Bengal Shilpalaya in Dhaka. The gathering featured personal reflections from journalist Kurratul-Ain-Tahmina, who shared intimate memories of the veteran cultural figure.

During the event, Tahmina recounted the enduring bond she has shared with Majumdar since her childhood. Though Majumdar married her aunt, Ferdousi Majumdar, in 1970, their relationship predates the union. Tahmina described Majumdar as a constant, quiet presence in her life—a man of few words whose affection was felt through consistent, silent support rather than grand gestures.

Reflecting on her youth, Tahmina shared anecdotes of spending time at the Indira Road residence of Majumdar and Ferdousi, where she would observe them rehearsing theatrical dialogues over dinner. She recalled Majumdar’s meticulous nature, noting how he would organize family finances for his spouse, and his characteristic “dry humor,” which she described as understated yet sharp and poignant.

Tahmina also highlighted Majumdar’s deep involvement in the lives of his extended family, recalling how he would provide pocket money for ice cream during childhood Eid celebrations and offer meaningful encouragement as she navigated her academic and professional life. She shared a memory of Majumdar gifting her Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel “Sei Somoy” upon her graduation, inscribed with his signature wit, and his reaction to her career transitions as a university teacher.

The tribute concluded with a nostalgic appeal from Tahmina, who recalled how Majumdar used to perform a playful dance on the stairs whenever he left their family home—a gesture she hopes to see once more. Celebrating his milestone birthday, she extended her heartfelt gratitude and warm wishes to the man she has affectionately addressed as “Kaka” throughout her life.
