Court Postpones Drug Case Hearing for Actress Pori Moni Following Absence Due to Family Emergency

A Dhaka court on Monday adjourned the hearing on charge framing in a narcotics case against popular actress Pori Moni, after she failed to appear citing personal reasons. Judge Rabiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-10 rescheduled the hearing for September 29.
Defense lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Suravi filed a petition requesting more time, stating that the actress could not attend the proceedings because her child had developed a fever following a vaccination. The lawyer further noted that the scheduled hearing coincided with the child’s birthday.
The case dates back to August 2021, when the Rapid Action Battalion conducted a raid at the actress’s residence and subsequently arrested her under the Narcotics Control Act. The operation occurred shortly after she had filed an attempted rape complaint against a businessman. Pori Moni was released from custody after spending nearly a month in prison.
In October 2021, Kazi Golam Mostafa, an inspector with the Criminal Investigation Department, submitted a charge sheet against Pori Moni and two other individuals. The court initially ordered the start of the trial on January 5, 2022.
The other two defendants in the case are the actress’s manager, Ashraful Islam Dipu, and her relative, Kabir Hossain Howlader.
Although the complainant in the case, Rapid Action Battalion officer Mojibor Rahman, had begun providing testimony, the legal proceedings faced delays. Following the initial framing of charges, Pori Moni petitioned the High Court to have the case dismissed. On March 1, 2022, the High Court issued a rule and stayed the proceedings against the actress for three months. The case returned to the lower court following further directives from the higher judiciary.
