Sylhet residents protest installation of signage obscuring historic Keane Bridge

The installation of a neon “I Love Sylhet” signage near the historic Keane Bridge has ignited a wave of public criticism, with residents and cultural activists accusing local authorities of compromising the aesthetic integrity of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The nearly 90-year-old bridge, which spans the Surma River, has long served as a primary symbol of Sylhet’s identity. Over the past week, however, the construction of the large, illuminated sign on the north bank of the river has obscured the view of the bridge’s structure, prompting backlash across social media platforms.
Observers have pointed to a lack of urban planning coordination, noting that the sign—installed on a raised concrete base opposite the Sylhet Circuit House—detracts from the historic silhouette of the bridge. Critics argue that the signage, which features the logos of both the Sylhet City Corporation and a private mobile network provider, was positioned without regard for the visual harmony of the site. Many have suggested that alternative placement could have highlighted both the city’s modern identity and its architectural heritage without obstruction.
According to a report by Prothom Alo, the City Corporation defended the project as an initiative to enhance urban beauty and create an engaging spot for tourists. Officials stated that the private mobile operator is funding the construction and maintenance of the sign, while the city provided only the land-use permit at no financial cost.
In response to the growing public outcry, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury acknowledged the concerns, emphasizing that the administration remains committed to preserving the city’s environment and architectural aesthetics. He pledged to inspect the site personally and confirmed that if the signage is found to be impeding the visibility or charm of the Keane Bridge, the city will take immediate corrective action, including the potential relocation of the structure.
