Dhaka man confesses to fatal stabbing of wife and mother-in-law

A 30-year-old man has confessed to the double murder of his wife and mother-in-law following a domestic dispute in the Kathalbagan area of Dhaka. The suspect, identified as Md. Hridoy, alias Shipon, provided a formal statement to the court on Monday after voluntarily surrendering to the Kalabagan Police Station.

Following the confession, Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam ordered Hridoy to be held in jail. Police sub-inspector Mazharul Islam, representing the court’s prosecution division, confirmed the proceedings.

The investigation, led by officer Ibrahim Hossain Sohel, determined that the violence stemmed from a long-standing pattern of domestic friction. The couple had been married for five years and shared a one-year-old son. According to court filings, tensions escalated significantly following a visit to the suspect’s ancestral home for a wedding ceremony in late July. The suspect reportedly returned to Dhaka alone on July 31, while his wife, 21-year-old Farzana Akhter Ratri, and her mother, 35-year-old Firoza Begum, returned to their Kathalbagan residence the following day.

On the morning of August 2, an argument between the couple reached a lethal point. Investigators state that Hridoy retrieved a vegetable knife from the kitchen and fatally attacked his wife. When Firoza Begum attempted to intervene to protect her daughter, she sustained multiple stab wounds to her throat, shoulders, and hands. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was declared dead by attending physicians.

Farzana’s father, Md. Faruk, filed a formal murder case with the Kalabagan police on the day of the incident. Authorities subsequently apprehended Hridoy after he turned himself in. Based on information provided by the suspect during interrogation, police recovered the weapon used in the attack from the scene. Officials confirmed that initial investigations have yielded sufficient evidence to link Hridoy directly to the double homicide.
