Actor Ilias Kanchan Returns to Bangladesh Following Extended Cancer Treatment in London

Renowned Bangladeshi actor Elias Kanchan is returning home following a grueling 15-month medical odyssey in London, where he has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. The veteran performer departed from London Heathrow Airport earlier today accompanied by his son-in-law, Ariful Islam Collins.

Liton Ershad, vice president of the actor’s road safety organization, Nirapad Sarak Chai, confirmed the arrival. However, Kanchan’s return is expected to be brief; he is scheduled to fly back to the United Kingdom before August 14 to undergo further medical evaluations on August 15.

The actor’s health journey has been arduous. Since departing for London in April of last year, Kanchan underwent brain surgery in August. Surgeons were unable to remove the entire tumor due to significant complications and clinical risks, necessitating a rigorous follow-up regimen that has included 60 sessions of chemotherapy.

Recent photographs taken at the airport show the physical toll of the prolonged treatment, with the actor appearing visibly changed. According to Ershad, the family’s confidence in the treatment trajectory has waned as the medical interventions have yet to yield the anticipated progress despite the utilization of London’s top-tier healthcare resources. The decision to return to Bangladesh was prompted by the actor’s own yearning for home amidst the taxing medical cycle.

A towering figure in Bengali cinema, Elias Kanchan rose to national prominence with record-breaking hits such as “Beder Meye Josna.” Beyond his cinematic achievements, which have earned him numerous accolades including the National Film Award, he has been widely recognized for his humanitarian work and was honored with the Ekushey Padak for his contributions to society.
