Mary Egida Rivera, the veteran actress who gained international acclaim for her memorable turn as Ned’s grandmother in the Marvel blockbuster “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has died. She was 80.
According to a report by TMZ, citing family members, Rivera passed away on April 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii, following a stroke. Her death has drawn tributes from Marvel fans and the wider film community, who remembered her as a performer who brought warmth and levity to the screen.
Rivera, a retired missionary, made an indelible impression on audiences despite her brief appearance in the 2021 film. Her character became a fan favorite during a pivotal scene in which she unknowingly interrupts a high-stakes interaction between Ned, Zendaya’s MJ, and the alternate-universe Spider-Man portrayed by Andrew Garfield. In the sequence, she famously tasks Garfield’s character with cleaning a spiderweb from the corner of her ceiling, a moment of comedic relief that allowed her to share the screen with some of Hollywood’s most prominent stars, including Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.
Family members noted that Rivera took immense pride in her contribution to the “Spider-Man” franchise. Beyond her work in film, she lived a life dedicated to service, having been born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines, before settling in the United States.
She is survived by her husband, Alejandro Rivera, their four children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
