Two Suspects Arrested in Chittagong Youth Wing Leader Murder Case

Chittagong district police have arrested two primary suspects in the June 13 murder of Juba Dal leader Masudul Haque Chowdhury in Rauzan. The suspects, identified as Md. Didar Alam and Absar Mia, were apprehended in the Sitakunda area on Sunday, according to District Superintendent of Police Md. Masud Alam.
During a press conference held Monday morning, Superintendent Alam confirmed that both men were directly involved in the shooting and were found in possession of a foreign-made pistol at the time of their arrest. Law enforcement records indicate that Didar is facing 13 prior criminal cases, while Absar is linked to eight. Both men are reportedly associates of Mohammad Raihan, a known criminal figure operating in the region. Police had previously apprehended another suspect, Mohammad Ilyas, in connection with the same case.
Masudul Haque Chowdhury, a senior joint convener of the Juba Dal in Rangunia upazila, was killed in broad daylight at the Choumuhani Bazar in Pahartali Union. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage indicate that the attackers opened fire in a public space located only hundreds of yards from the assistant police superintendent’s office. Investigators noted that the group consisted of at least five armed assailants, with some utilizing pistols and others carrying shotguns.
While the investigation into the specific motive and the chain of command remains ongoing, police suspect the violence may be linked to a long-standing dispute over the control of sand extraction rights along the Karnaphuli River. The victim’s family has suggested that Masudul was actively preparing for an upcoming Union Parishad chairmanship election, which may have served as an additional catalyst for the attack. The victim’s brother, Peyarul Haque Chowdhury, filed a formal complaint at the Rauzan police station on June 15, naming 11 suspects, including affiliates of the foreign-based fugitive Sajjad Ali Khan, alongside eight unidentified individuals.
In addition to the Juba Dal leader’s case, Superintendent Alam reported progress in two other recent high-profile violent crimes. Police arrested the alleged mastermind behind the July 10 murder of Nurul Azim in Hathazari, identified as Didar Alam, who was tracked to Keraniganj in Dhaka. Furthermore, authorities arrested two suspects, identified as Borhan and Rony, in connection with the July 30 attempted murder of a man named Nazim in Mirsharai. Police recovered a foreign pistol and ammunition during the latter operation.
