Jamaat-e-Islami expels Rajshahi leader following child sexual assault arrest

The Rajshahi chapter of Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled a local party leader following allegations that he sexually assaulted a nine-year-old girl in Paba Upazila. The suspect, 35-year-old Omar Faruk, who served as a ward-level *rukon* for the party, is currently being held in Rajshahi Central Jail after being arrested by local police.
Authorities took Faruk into custody last Friday evening at his residence. The arrest followed a formal complaint filed by the victim’s mother under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Faruk was presented before a local court on Saturday morning, which subsequently ordered his incarceration.
According to the official police report, the incident took place on July 12. Faruk, who operated a pharmacy and provided private tutoring to local children at his home, allegedly dismissed his other students early to isolate the nine-year-old victim. Following the encounter, the child returned home and reported the incident to her mother, prompting the family to seek legal recourse.
Abdur Rahman, the local union emir for Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed that the party conducted an internal inquiry into the matter. He stated that the investigation found preliminary evidence supporting the allegations against Faruk. Consequently, the party leadership moved to expel him immediately, citing moral turpitude and a violation of the organization’s ethical standards. Faruk’s brother, Abu Bakar, serves as the secretary for the same ward branch of the party.
