Dhaka University professor Dipti Saha dies at 58

Professor Dipti Saha, a distinguished academic and former department chair at the University of Dhaka, passed away on Friday at the age of 58. She died at a hospital in the capital shortly after being rushed there when she lost consciousness due to food choking during breakfast.
As a prominent educator and researcher, Professor Saha served as the 17th chairperson of the university’s Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Her sudden passing has drawn tributes from the highest levels of the university administration, with Vice-Chancellor Professor A.S.M. Maksud Kamal expressing profound grief. In a statement, the Vice-Chancellor lauded her significant contributions to education and research, noting that she would be long remembered for her dedication to academic excellence.
To allow students and colleagues to pay their final respects, Professor Saha’s remains were taken to the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering on Friday afternoon. During the ceremony, the university’s acting registrar laid a wreath on her coffin on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. Following the tributes, her funeral rites were performed at the Postogola crematorium.
A native of Hariyarpara in Enayetnagar, Narayanganj, Professor Saha is survived by her siblings and a wide community of admirers and students. The alumni association of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering issued a statement on Saturday, offering their deepest condolences to her bereaved family.
