Dhaka North City Corporation to Crack Down on Unfit Vehicles and Unlicensed Drivers Following Worker Fatality

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan has announced a crackdown on unfit vehicles and unlicensed or unskilled drivers following a fatal road accident in the capital’s Madhya Badda area that claimed the life of a city corporation cleaner, Shefali Begum.

During a visit to the victim’s home on Friday, Khan stated that the DNCC would coordinate with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to implement stringent legal measures against illegal vehicles and unqualified operators. The administrator emphasized that urgent action is required to prevent such tragedies and ensure that unskilled drivers are no longer permitted to operate on city roads.

Addressing the safety of essential municipal workers, Khan noted that cleaners provide critical services to the city around the clock and deserve a secure working environment. He urged road users to exercise greater caution and called upon drivers to refrain from reckless maneuvers that jeopardize public safety.

Responding to inquiries regarding the internal practices of the DNCC, the administrator asserted that city corporation vehicles are operated exclusively by trained professionals, though he pledged to investigate any reports suggesting that unqualified personnel or helpers might be handling official transport.

In recognition of the loss, the DNCC has pledged financial support totaling 400,000 taka to the victim’s family, alongside one year of salary as compensation. Khan reiterated the corporation’s commitment to supporting the families of its employees in times of crisis.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shah Alam and Housing and Public Works State Minister Ahmed Sohel Manzur accompanied the administrator during the visit to express their condolences. Senior DNCC officials, including Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Md. Humayun Kabir, were also present to offer support to the grieving family.
