Case Filed Against Sarjis Alam and NCP Leaders Over Habiganj Clashes

A case of attempted murder, vandalism, and theft has been filed against 50 individuals in Habiganj, including Nasiruddin Patwary, the central chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP), and Sarjis Alam, the party’s northern region chief organizer. The case was lodged at the Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station late Thursday by Iqbal Hossain Rukan, joint general secretary of the district Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
According to the police report, the charges stem from a series of violent clashes that erupted between NCP members and Chhatra Dal activists near the Court Mosque in Habiganj municipality on the afternoon of July 28. The plaintiff alleges that NCP members launched an armed assault using rods, machetes, spears, and bricks, resulting in injuries to several Chhatra Dal leaders, including Mahfuz Chowdhury and Mozakkir Hossain Emon. The complaint further alleges that the assailants robbed the plaintiff and others of their mobile phones and stole 50,000 taka in cash during the chaos.
The plaintiff stated that the Chhatra Dal activists had gathered as part of a nationwide program to visit the family of Ripon Sheel, who died during the July protest movement, and to attend a memorial meeting. He accused a group of 40 to 50 people—led by Nasiruddin Patwary, Sarjis Alam, Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, and Mahbubul Bari Chowdhury Mubin—of orchestrating the attack. Ten individuals have been named in the filing, while the remaining 40 suspects remain unidentified.
This legal action follows a separate case filed earlier by the NCP against Chhatra Dal activists regarding the same incident. In that instance, the NCP accused 11 named members of the district Chhatra Dal leadership and 100 unidentified individuals of attacking them while they were returning to the local circuit house after a procession. The NCP claims at least 15 of its members were injured, with one suffering the permanent loss of vision in one eye, and alleges that vehicles belonging to several media outlets were damaged during the confrontation.
Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Haque confirmed that an investigation is underway. As of Friday, no arrests had been made in connection with the counter-complaints.
