Habiganj authorities file case against 111 individuals following attack on National Citizens Party motorcade

A legal case has been filed against 111 individuals, including the president of the Habiganj District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), following an attack on a motorcade belonging to the National Citizens Party (NCP). The case, initiated by Habiganj District Chhatrashakti convener Tanmoy Taher, was registered at the Sadar Model Police Station early Thursday morning.

According to Officer-in-Charge Zahid Hossain, the lawsuit names 11 specific individuals alongside approximately 100 unidentified suspects. The primary accused is District JCD President Shah Rajib Ahmed, while other named suspects include members of the Brindaban Government College branch of the JCD and various local student leaders. The legal action stems from a formal complaint filed by central NCP leaders with the Superintendent of Police on Wednesday night.

The tensions erupted on Tuesday afternoon following the NCP’s “July March” program in Habiganj, where the party’s motorcade was intercepted and its members physically assaulted. The NCP has publicly blamed the BNP and its student wing, the JCD, for the violence. Subsequent protest rallies by the NCP led to further clashes, prompting the district administration to impose Section 144 in the Habiganj municipal area on Wednesday due to fears of escalating instability.

Defending his organization against the allegations, District JCD President Shah Rajib Ahmed denied any student wing involvement in the attack. He characterized the incident as a spontaneous outburst of public anger triggered by “provocative” statements from NCP leaders and dismissed the subsequent lawsuit as a premeditated political move.

Prior to the filing of the case, police had blocked the NCP motorcade at various points in Sreemangal and Bahubal as central leaders—including Nahid Islam, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and Nasiruddin Patwary—attempted to enter the city. Unable to proceed, the leadership held a sit-in near the Kamaijora police outpost before submitting their formal complaint.

Following a restoration of order, the district administration announced the withdrawal of the indefinite Section 144 restrictions effective Thursday morning. District Commissioner G.M. Sarfaraz confirmed that the situation in the municipal area has stabilized, allowing for the lifting of emergency measures.
