Mymensingh man killed in targeted attack sparks mob violence and arson

A 40-year-old businessman in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon upazila was killed on Monday following a brutal attack that triggered a violent backlash from local residents. The victim, Mahiduzzaman, a producer and trader of fish fry, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital shortly after noon, nearly 15 hours after he was lured to a remote location and slashed by an assailant.
According to local police, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday when the victim was contacted by phone and asked to meet at his fish enclosure in the Bagber area. Authorities identified the suspect as 35-year-old Tofazzal Hossain, also known as Topon, from the nearby Sumpara Morolbari area. Upon arrival, Mahiduzzaman was allegedly ambushed by the suspect, who used a sharp weapon to inflict severe, multiple wounds.

The victim was initially rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital by family members but was later transferred to Dhaka due to the critical nature of his condition. His death on Monday afternoon sparked immediate outrage in the local community.
Shortly after news of his passing reached the village, an angry mob converged on the residence of the accused. The crowd proceeded to vandalize the property before setting the suspect’s home on fire. Local police and the fire service were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames and restore order.

Gafargaon Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Mashiur Rahman confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the fatal attack. He noted that while authorities have arrived on the scene to document the destruction and maintain security, officials are still working to apprehend the suspects and uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder.
