Thailand police seized 1.6 tons of drugs hidden under sacks of cabbage in a pickup van. Police reportedly found ketamine and crystal methamphetamine (ice) there.
According to information provided by the Bangkok Police, 900 kg of ketamine and 700 kg of crystal methamphetamine were found in the seized shipment. The arrested driver admitted that he was promised 100,000 Thai baht (about 3,000 US dollars) for transporting this large amount of drugs.
According to Thai law, drug-trafficking charges can carry a minimum sentence of 15 years to a maximum of life in prison. As Thailand is known as one of the main routes for drug smuggling in Southeast Asia, the country’s government has stepped up surveillance.
According to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the rate of drug trafficking in East and Southeast Asia is increasing alarmingly. A record 236 tons of methamphetamine was seized in the region in 2024, an increase of nearly 24 percent from the previous year.
