Bangladeshi businessman shot dead in South Africa, daughter wounded in attack

A Bangladeshi expatriate businessman was shot and killed by unidentified assailants in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on Tuesday evening, in an attack that also left his five-year-old daughter wounded. The victim, 40-year-old Mohammad Yasin, was a native of Kanchanpur village in the Noakhali district of Bangladesh.

Yasin, who had resided in South Africa for approximately 16 years, had established a business and built a home in the city. He had relocated his wife and children to join him in the country one year ago. According to his brother, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time as Yasin was returning to his residence after closing his business. Assailants opened fire at the entrance of his home, killing him instantly and wounding his young daughter, Farhana.

The news of the tragedy reached Yasin’s ancestral village early Wednesday, prompting an outpouring of grief from his relatives and the local community.

Local authorities in Noakhali have confirmed awareness of the incident. Mohammad Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Sudharam Model Police Station, stated that he had received reports regarding the fatal shooting of the expatriate. Meanwhile, the Sadar Upazila Executive Officer, Homayra Islam, has initiated inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
