Jhenaidah Youth Dal leader suspended over extortion allegations

Jhenaidah district Juba Dal leadership has suspended a local leader following allegations that he attempted to extort 500,000 taka by intervening in a family dispute. Atiar Rahman, a member of the Juba Dal’s Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila convening committee, was removed from all party positions and his primary membership effective Thursday.
The disciplinary action, confirmed in a press release signed by District Juba Dal Office Secretary Mashiur Rahman, stems from a contentious marriage dispute involving a woman from Madhuhati Union’s Bajargopalpur village who had relocated to Faridpur. The woman’s husband, Purnay Saha, alleged that his wife left their home with several tolas of gold. Seeking assistance to reconcile the situation, Saha turned to local intermediaries, including Rahman.
Instead of resolving the matter, the youth leader allegedly leveraged the situation by promising to recover the gold and the wife in exchange for a payment of 500,000 taka. The accusations gained traction after an audio recording of a telephone conversation between Rahman and Saha circulated widely on social media.
Saha reported that he initially paid the leader 2,000 taka but later discovered that such extortion tactics under the guise of mediation were a recurring pattern for the accused. Saha further stated that he has since received threats via telephone for refusing to pay the full demand.
Rahman could not be reached for comment despite multiple attempts to contact him via mobile phone.
Jhenaidah District Juba Dal President Ahsan Habib confirmed the suspension, stating that the organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that breaches party discipline. According to Habib, the incident remains under investigation, and if the allegations are formally proven, the party will move to permanently expel the member.
