Four of five newborns die within hours of birth at Faridpur hospital

A mother in Faridpur, Bangladesh, gave birth to quintuplets at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Thursday, but four of the infants died within 12 hours of delivery. The surviving male infant remains in critical condition under medical observation.
The mother, 22-year-old Chandni Begum, arrived at the hospital’s labor ward at approximately 4:10 p.m. on Thursday. Between 5:20 p.m. and 5:50 p.m., she delivered the five children—three boys and two girls—naturally and without surgical intervention. According to family reports, the couple, residents of the Bhobukdia village in Nagarkanda upazila, were aware of the multiple pregnancy and had been seeking regular medical guidance throughout the term.

Medical staff noted that the infants were born prematurely, at less than seven months of gestation. Each baby weighed between 700 and 800 grams. Intern physician Pritiraj Pal Chowdhury categorized the infants as having “extremely low birth weight,” a condition that typically requires specialized neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) support.
Due to the lack of sufficient NICU facilities at Faridpur Medical College Hospital to manage such high-risk births, doctors had advised transferring the newborns to Dhaka. However, the infants succumbed to complications related to their extreme prematurity and low birth weight.

As of Friday morning, the lone surviving child was receiving oxygen therapy in the hospital’s neonatal ward. Senior staff nurse Riya Biswas confirmed that medical teams are continuing to provide necessary care to the infant.
