Court grants two-day remand for suspect in Mymensingh gang rape case

A Mymensingh court has granted a two-day remand for a suspect accused of participating in the gang rape of a woman in the Gafargaon sub-district. The suspect, 35-year-old Shahab Uddin, was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday, where Judge Asma Sultana approved the police request for interrogation following his arrest the previous day.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night when a group of seven to eight individuals forced their way into a home in a remote Gafargaon village. According to police reports and accounts from the victim’s family, the perpetrators held the woman’s husband at gunpoint, binding his hands, feet, and eyes before abducting his 20-year-old wife. The attackers took the woman to a nearby secluded area, where they subjected her to gang rape.
The victim’s mother filed a formal complaint on Wednesday, naming four individuals as primary suspects and citing four others as unidentified accomplices. Following the filing of the case, authorities apprehended Shahab Uddin, who was identified as the lead suspect.
Following the attack, the victim was transported to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Officer-in-Charge of Pagla Police Station, Aminul Islam, confirmed that while the police had initially requested a five-day remand for the suspect, the court authorized two days for the investigation. Law enforcement officials noted that efforts to identify and capture the remaining suspects are ongoing.
