International Crimes Tribunal to Rule on Formal Charges Against Former Ministers in Chittagong July Uprising Case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the formal framing of charges against 22 individuals, including former ministers Hasan Mahmud and Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, and former lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury. The charges pertain to alleged crimes against humanity committed in Chattogram during the July mass uprising. The tribunal set the date for the order following the conclusion of arguments from defense attorneys seeking to have the charges dismissed.

The prosecution has leveled three specific charges against the 22 defendants. The first count relates to the July 16, 2024, killings of Md. Wasim Akram, Faisal Ahmed Shanto, and Md. Faruk in Chattogram. The second charge concerns the deaths of Tanvir Siddiqui, Md. Simon, and Hridoy Chandra on July 18, while the third charge involves the severe wounding of over 100 individuals during the unrest.

In a separate proceeding at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, defense lawyers cross-examined the ninth prosecution witness, Atiqur Rahman, in the case against former Law Minister Anisul Huq and former prime ministerial advisor Salman F. Rahman. Rahman, a sub-inspector with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), provided testimony regarding crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the same period of civil upheaval.
