Forest officials rescue tethered barking deer from private home in Habiganj

Forestry officials in Habiganj’s Chunarughat upazila rescued a tethered barking deer from a locked room in Bholarjum village on Saturday afternoon. Following its recovery, the animal was transported to the Kalenga Range Rescue Center, where it is currently undergoing observation by wildlife experts.

The rescue operation was launched after forest department officials received a tip-off that a deer was being held captive inside a room belonging to a local resident identified as Yakut Mia. Upon arriving at the scene, the forest team secured the animal and moved it to the safety of the sanctuary’s rescue facility.

Kalenga Forest Officer Abdullah Al Amin confirmed the deer is receiving care and will be released back into the wild once it is cleared as healthy by veterinary staff. The Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary, a vital protected forest area in Chunarughat, serves as a natural habitat for several indigenous barking deer populations.

Abdul Zahir Mia, general secretary of the Chunarughat Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee, emphasized the importance of public vigilance in protecting local fauna. He urged citizens to immediately notify forestry officials, law enforcement, or conservation agencies when discovering trapped or injured wildlife, warning that amateur attempts to treat or handle distressed animals can prove fatal.

Chunarughat Upazila Executive Officer Galib Chowdhury underscored that the illegal capture or hunting of protected wildlife is a punishable offense under national law. He called for intensified efforts to bolster public awareness to prevent future incidents of poaching and captivity within the region.
