Measles outbreak claims nine more lives in Bangladesh as total death toll approaches 700

Nine more people have died from symptoms associated with measles in the past 24 hours, according to the latest report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday. The fatalities, occurring between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, bring the total number of deaths since March 15 to 698.
Official data indicates that 605 children have died while exhibiting symptoms of the disease, while laboratory tests have confirmed 93 deaths directly linked to measles. Geographically, the most recent casualties were concentrated in the Dhaka division, which accounted for eight of the deaths, while the remaining victim was recorded in the Sylhet division.

The surge in cases remains significant, with health officials reporting 893 new patients exhibiting measles-like symptoms within the last 24 hours. Since the outbreak began on March 15, the total number of individuals showing such symptoms has reached 96,653.
Diagnostic efforts continue to identify new infections, with 52 cases confirmed in the last day. This brings the national total of confirmed measles cases to 11,442 since mid-March.

Despite the high infection rate, recovery trends remain steady. DGHS data reveals that 80,497 patients have been hospitalized due to the virus since the start of the reporting period. Of those, 76,788 individuals have since recovered and been discharged from medical facilities.
