Body of Jahangirnagar University student recovered from Buriganga River near Dhaka

The decomposed body of a Jahangirnagar University student was recovered from beneath a bridge over the Buriganga River in the Bosila area of Dhaka on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Deep Majumdar, a student from the university’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, belonging to the 50th batch.
University Proctor Professor A.K.M. Rashidul Alam confirmed the identification at 9:00 p.m. following a formal recognition by the student’s family and peers at the hospital. While a university identification card was discovered near the remains, initial verification had been difficult due to the advanced state of decomposition.
The discovery first came to public attention late Sunday afternoon when a social media post in a university-affiliated group shared photographs of the recovery efforts and the recovered identification card. Following these reports, authorities confirmed that a body had been retrieved from the river, though investigators initially held off on official confirmation until kin could perform a visual identification.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police for the River Police, Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, the body appeared to have been in the water for at least two to three days. The remains have been transported to Mitford Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which officials hope will provide definitive insight into the circumstances surrounding the death.
