Police Link Comilla Autorickshaw Driver Murder to Romantic Rivalry Rather Than Gang Dispute

Police in Comilla’s Chauddagram have linked the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Md. Hridoy to a personal feud involving a married woman, debunking earlier reports that the killing stemmed from a traffic dispute or gang violence. Authorities confirmed on Thursday that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred Wednesday night at the Dhora Bazar area.
According to Chauddagram Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Arif Hossain, initial investigations reveal that the conflict centered on a romantic dispute involving a woman whose husband resides abroad. Police identified two men, Rakib and Pranto, as the central figures in the dispute, alleging that both had maintained relations with the woman. Rakib reportedly believed that Pranto was responsible for the woman cutting off contact with him, leading to heightened tensions between their respective groups.

On Wednesday evening, Rakib and his associates confronted Pranto’s group near Dhora Bazar. During the ensuing altercation, a man identified as Rajib allegedly stabbed Hridoy, who was caught in the middle of the clash. Hridoy was rushed to the Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival, citing a deep, fatal chest wound that caused excessive blood loss.
Contrary to initial accounts circulating among the victim’s associates—which suggested the killing was a random act of gang violence sparked by a minor argument over a motorcycle—police stated that the narrative was deliberately manufactured. Officer Hossain noted that Rakib had attempted to mislead investigators and the public by propagating the “gang violence” theory to disguise the personal nature of the conflict.

The victim’s family maintains that Hridoy was an innocent bystander with no involvement in the feud. His brother, Faruk Hossain, who filed a murder case against six individuals on Thursday morning, stated that Hridoy was simply a hardworking auto-rickshaw driver who had gone out for tea before becoming an unintended victim of the clash.
Police have arrested Pranto and another suspect named Pansi, both of whom were named in the initial case file. A third individual, Jasim Uddin, was apprehended on suspicion of assisting the primary suspect, Rajib, in his attempt to flee. Authorities currently have the woman involved in the dispute in custody for questioning as they work to verify the details of the conflict. A manhunt is underway to locate Rajib, who remains the primary suspect in the stabbing.
