Health Minister Rejects Ad-din Hospital Explanation Over Newborn Deaths

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the explanation provided by Dhaka’s Ad-Din Hospital regarding the recent deaths of six newborns at the facility. The minister stated on Wednesday that the hospital’s formal response contained excessive irrelevant information and failed to address the core concerns raised by health authorities.

The incident occurred on May 27, when six newborns died at the Moghbazar hospital between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. In response to the tragedy, the Directorate General of Health Services initiated an investigation and issued a show-cause notice to the hospital’s owner, Sheikh Mohiuddin. The notice demanded an explanation as to why the facility’s license should not be revoked, granting a 72-hour window for a response.

Minister Hossain characterized the hospital’s provided account as unacceptable, noting that it deviated from the necessary factual details surrounding the deaths. He confirmed that a high-level meeting will be held on Thursday to determine the government’s next steps, emphasizing that the ministry is prepared to take stringent action if the response remains unsatisfactory.

The health ministry has maintained a firm stance throughout the inquiry, with the minister previously declaring that the protection of public safety and human life remains the government’s primary mandate. Beyond the administrative review, a criminal case has been filed in connection with the incident. Officials have indicated that, alongside the ongoing administrative investigation, the findings of the judicial process will dictate further punitive measures against the institution.
