Tungipara students block highway to demand change of HSC exam center

Students of Tungipara Government College blocked the Dhaka-Pirojpur regional highway on Monday morning, demanding a change to their designated Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination center. The protest, which began at 10:00 a.m. in front of the college before shifting to the Patgati bus stand, halted traffic for two hours and caused significant congestion along the vital transport artery.

The students are protesting the continued designation of Baghiarhat School and College—formerly Khan Saheb Sheikh Mosharraf Hossain School and College—as their official exam center. Participants in the demonstration alleged that they have faced unprofessional conduct from some staff members at that facility in previous years. Furthermore, they cited the distance from their college as a primary grievance, arguing that the site is inconvenient and inappropriate for government college students. They are calling for the examination to be relocated to a government-run institution, such as the G.T. Government High School, which had previously served as a center.

Local administrative officials, including Tungipara Assistant Commissioner (Land) Al-Amin Hawlader and Officer-in-Charge of Tungipara Police Station Ayub Ali, arrived at the scene to engage with the protesters. Addressing the crowd, Hawlader acknowledged the students’ concerns but emphasized that changing an examination center is a complex administrative process that cannot be resolved immediately. He assured the students that authorities would investigate the claims of misconduct and discuss potential adjustments with higher-level officials.

Following the intervention by local authorities, the students withdrew their blockade at approximately 12:00 p.m., allowing traffic to resume. According to Officer-in-Charge Ayub Ali, the situation has returned to normal. Police patrols have been increased in the area to monitor the situation and maintain public order.
