Mother turns in drug-addicted son as authorities arrest three in Chittagong crackdown

A mother in Chittagong’s Banshkhali upazila took the difficult step of filing a formal complaint against her own son on Sunday, seeking intervention after his persistent drug addiction led to a cycle of theft and physical abuse. The local Union Parishad chairman referred the case to police, leading to the arrest of 38-year-old Md. Shahidullah. A mobile court subsequently sentenced him to nine months in prison for his actions.
The arrest was part of a broader crackdown on narcotics in the region. According to the local administration, the operation resulted in the sentencing of two other individuals for drug-related offenses on the same night. Md. Mainuddin, a 29-year-old covered van driver, was apprehended in the Palegram area while intoxicated, while 42-year-old Jamal Hossain was detained in the Hoittoltola-Jungle Poirang area. Both men received three-month terms of rigorous imprisonment.
Executive Magistrate Md. Omar Sani Akon confirmed the sentencing on Monday morning, emphasizing that the local authorities are maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse. He stated that the administration is committed to taking immediate action against any reports of drug-related criminal activity.
