Munni Akhtar has been examined by the defense lawyer as the third witness in a case of crimes against humanity against Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan in the case of disappearance and murder. In the cross-examination, Munni Akhter said, they were told from Sarankhola police station in Bagerhat that her husband Md. Nazrul Islam was killed by tying his hands and feet, cutting his stomach and tying him with cement sacks.
Munni Akhtar was interrogated by Aminul Gani, the lawyer of the accused, at the International Criminal Tribunal-1 today. Earlier, Munni Akhtar gave a statement in this case on April 8.
Ziaul Ahsan, the only accused in this case, has been arrested and is in jail. He was produced in the tribunal today.
In the cross-examination of the counsel for the accused, Munni Akhtar said that she did not remember whether her husband Nazrul Islam had said anywhere else that he was an eyewitness to the BDR murder. She also does not know whether her husband was an accused in the BDR murder case or not. It is not true that her husband has given false testimony implicating Ziaul Ahsan in the murder incident, she also mentioned in the cross-examination.
Earlier, Munni Akhter had said in her statement given in the tribunal on April 8 that her husband Nazrul Islam worked as a medical assistant at BDR Hospital in Pilkhana. During the BDR rebellion in 2009, he was scared to death by climbing the wall. Then he went to a relative’s house in Keraniganj. From there contacted him (wife) on the phone. Then they lived in a house in front of Pilkhana Gate No. 1. From there he went to his aunt’s house in Postogola. From there she took her daughter to her husband in Keraniganj. After staying there for some time, Jhalkathi went to her father’s house with her daughter.
Munni Akhtar also said that in 2010, her husband took a job at Madhumati Clinic in Kotalipara, Gopalganj. There he rented a house in the staff quarters. Then they started living there with their daughter. After going there, she came to know that her husband was working at Madhumati Clinic under the name of Nurul Amin Munshi, hiding his real name. Her husband was on duty from 8 am to 6 pm every day. On March 15, 2010, he did not return to perform his duties.
The next day, Munni Akhter said in the deposition referring to Madhumati’s visit to the clinic, that one Ruhul Amin Sheikh used to work with her husband. Ruhul Amin said that on March 15, 2010, 5-6 men in plain clothes took Munni’s husband to a microbus and beat him (Ruhul) and left him there. One day a DSB man came from Jhalkathi and told Munni’s father-in-law that the body of her husband Nazrul Islam had been recovered by the police from Baleshwar river in Sharankhola, Bagerhat.
After seeing the picture of Nazrul Islam’s body in the newspaper, his brother Zahidul Islam identified him. Munni Akhter also said in his deposition that he went to Sarankhola police station along with his relatives and identified the clothes worn by his husband. When asked to return the body, the police said that her husband’s body was buried as an heir through Anjuman Mufidul Islam. Later, with the help of the Deputy Commissioner, after the DNA test, her husband’s body was brought home from the grave and buried again in the family graveyard.
