Journalist Anis Alamgir Granted Permanent Bail in ACC Case

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted prominent journalist Anis Alamgir permanent bail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and permitted him to travel abroad for one month. However, the court denied his application to waive personal appearances, instructing him to attend future hearings in person.
Judge Md. Sabbir Foyez of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court issued the order during a scheduled hearing. Alamgir’s lawyer, Taslima Jahan Poppy, confirmed the court’s decisions to the media outlet Prothom Alo.

Alamgir, who was present in court for the proceedings, had submitted three separate applications. These included requests for permanent bail, a waiver of his personal attendance, and permission to travel internationally. The court ultimately approved the permanent bail and allowed him to stay abroad for up to one month, while rejecting the plea to be excused from personal appearances.
Speaking to Prothom Alo after the hearing, Alamgir expressed relief at the permanent bail but acknowledged the requirement to appear in court. He stated he was “not getting rid of the case” and voiced hope that the current government would relieve him from what he described as harassment.

The ACC filed the case against Anis Alamgir on January 15. He was formally arrested in connection with the case on January 28 and had initially been granted bail on March 11.
