Hasina Cabinet Ministers, Journalist Among Three Arrested in Shapla Chottor Case
A former minister and two former media executives were formally arrested by International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka on Thursday in connection with a human rights violation case stemming from killings during a Hefazat-e-Islam rally in Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar in May 2013. The tribunal formally booked former minister Dipu Moni, former Managing Director of Ekattor Media Limited Mozammel Haque Babu, and former chief correspondent of Ekattor Television Farzana Rupa.
The three individuals were presented before the tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, which subsequently issued the arrest orders. The tribunal’s other members include Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The prosecution had filed an application on May 7, requesting the appearance of Dipu Moni, Mozammel Haque Babu, and Farzana Rupa in connection with the case, which the tribunal then granted. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 7, when an investigation report is expected to be submitted.
Other prominent individuals accused in the ongoing case include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Hoque, Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan, former Inspectors General of Police (IGP) A.K.M. Shahidul Hoque, Hasan Mahmud Khandker, and Benazir Ahmed, as well as Gonojagoron Moncho spokesperson Imran H. Sarkar, and former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Molla Nazrul Islam, among others.
According to Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam, information gathered so far indicates that 58 individuals were killed in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Cumilla, and Chattogram during the violence surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally in Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar in May 2013. Islam stated that the identities of these 58 victims have been confirmed.
