Moushumis Contract Marriage Production Halted, Director Jahangir Explains

The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) has revoked the censor certificate for the film ‘Contract Marriage,’ starring popular actress Moushumi, following a formal complaint from a co-actress who alleged the project’s true nature was misrepresented.

BFDC Managing Director Masuma Rahman Tani confirmed the decision on Wednesday, May 13, stating that the action was taken after actress Jeba Jannat filed a written complaint. Tani elaborated that while the project initially received a censor clearance due to a lack of complaints, Jannat later claimed she was hired for a drama but discovered it was being planned for release as a feature film.

Furthermore, Jannat asserted that she had no formal contract for her involvement in a film. Her objections led to the cancellation of the movie’s release permit, Tani confirmed.

Lead actress Moushumi had previously expressed her surprise and dissatisfaction regarding the film’s status. In an audio message circulated on social media, she stated she had initially agreed to a small-scale drama about a girl’s struggles in the United States, later consenting to a telefilm at the request of director Hasan Jahangir. She was “astonished” to learn it was being released as a full-length feature film.

Director and actor Hasan Jahangir, who also features in ‘Contract Marriage,’ reacted strongly to the revocation. He told media outlets that the production had already incurred costs exceeding 3 crore Bangladeshi Taka. Jahangir indicated he would appeal directly to the Prime Minister if the film’s release remained halted just one day before its scheduled premiere.

In addition to Moushumi and Jeba Jannat, Hasan Jahangir also played a role in the controversial production.
