Mother Jailed With Infant, Leaves Two Children at Prison Gate

A mother of three, Farhana Akter, was sent to Lakshmipur District Jail on Monday afternoon in connection with an assault case, bringing her 18-month-old son with her while her two school-aged children watched from outside the prison gates. The court’s decision to deny bail for Akter, who is accused in a land dispute-related altercation, has sparked significant discussion on social media after her lawyer posted images of the children.
The dramatic scene unfolded as Akter, holding her youngest child, was escorted from a prison van into the facility. Her elder son, a fifth-grader, and daughter, a second-grader, were brought to the jail by their guardians from school after learning of their mother’s impending incarceration. Akter bid farewell to them before entering, accompanied by her toddler, whom the court permitted to stay with her.

The conflict stems from a long-standing land dispute between Ismail Hossain of Sahapur village and Aftab Uddin Bhuiyan. On April 9, Aftab Uddin, accompanied by several individuals, allegedly attacked Hossain’s home, assaulting female members of the family and injuring several people who later received treatment at Sadar Hospital. A video purportedly showing former Chhatra Shibir leader Aftab Uddin assaulting women at Hossain’s residence went viral on social media.
Following the incident, Ismail Hossain filed a complaint, leading to Aftab Uddin’s arrest by police on April 14. The next day, Aftab Uddin’s brother, Mahtab Uddin Bhuiyan, filed a counter-case against Farhana Akter and nine others. It was in this latter case that Farhana Akter appeared before the Lakshmipur Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where she and co-accused Zahir Uddin were denied bail and ordered to be imprisoned. Senior Judicial Magistrate Amali Court’s clerk, Delwar Hossain, confirmed the order was issued by Judge Shah Jamal.

Mohsin Kabir, Akter’s lawyer, posted images of Akter and her children on social media, highlighting the plight of the two school-going children who had left their ongoing exams to see their mother. Kabir stated that the plaintiff’s case was based on false allegations and confirmed that a bail application for Farhana Akter would be filed under special provisions on Tuesday.
Ismail Hossain, Farhana Akter’s husband, expressed concern over his children’s mental state following the sudden development. He confirmed that their 18-month-old son is with his mother in jail, while the two older children are at home.
Conversely, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Jasim Uddin, alleged that Farhana Akter, the main accused, had struck his client, Mahtab Uddin, on the head with an iron rod, causing a severe injury. Mahtab Uddin Bhuiyan, speaking to local media by phone, confirmed he sustained a major head injury and was hospitalized for several days. He clarified that doctors informed him his brain was not exposed, but rather it was fat.
Noor Mohammad Sohel, the acting jailer of Lakshmipur District Jail, confirmed the arrival of Farhana Akter and her 18-month-old son, Siam, at the facility on Monday afternoon.
