India wants Dhaka’s cooperation to send back ‘illegal Bangladeshis’
New Delhi seeks Dhaka’s cooperation in repatriating Bangladeshis illegally staying in India. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this in response to a question at the weekly briefing at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi today.
In the briefing, a journalist said to a question, after the announcement of the results of the West Bengal assembly elections, a minister of Bangladesh said that appropriate action will be taken if there is a ‘pushback’ from India. He wants to know the Indian government’s position on this matter.
In response, Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘Look, we have heard such comments in the last few days. These comments have to be seen in the context of the main issue of repatriation of illegal Bangladeshis from India. Bangladesh definitely needs cooperation for this. More than 2 thousand 860 cases of nationality verification are pending with Bangladesh. Some or several of these cases have been pending for more than five years.
A spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, “Our policy is that any foreign national who is illegally present must be repatriated in accordance with the law, due process and established bilateral arrangements.”
Jaiswal expressed hope that Bangladesh will quickly complete the process of nationality verification, so that the repatriation of illegal immigrants is completed in an orderly manner.
In response to another question, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India said, “There are 54 rivers between India and Bangladesh, which are used by both countries.” We have a well-organized bilateral system to discuss all water related issues. Meetings of these bilateral arrangements continue at regular intervals.
