Wild elephant herd blocks traffic on Kaptai-Rangamati highway for three hours

A herd of wild elephants blocked a major road in Rangamati for three hours on Thursday, causing significant disruption to traffic and sparking panic among motorists and passengers.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the Agarbagan area along the Kaptai-Rangamati-Asambasti road. According to local sources and officials, the animals emerged from the nearby forest and occupied the thoroughfare, forcing all vehicular movement to a halt.
Upon receiving reports from commuters, a team from the Kaptai Range office of the Chittagong Hill Tracts South Forest Division arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. The operation to clear the road was led by Kaptai Range Officer Mamunur Rahman and included forest department personnel alongside members of the Elephant Response Team.
The rescue team initially attempted to drive the elephants back into the forest using fireworks. When those measures proved ineffective, the team resorted to firing blank shots and utilizing vehicle sirens. The herd finally retreated into the forest at approximately 8:00 p.m., allowing traffic to resume.
Following the incident, Range Officer Mamunur Rahman issued a formal advisory warning travelers about the increased movement of wild elephants on the Kaptai-Rangamati road during evening hours. He urged the public to avoid using the route at night to mitigate the risk of dangerous human-wildlife encounters.
