Wedding called off in Akhaura after groom disputes traditional feast menu and dowry demands

A wedding ceremony in the Akhaura Upazila of Brahmanbaria was abruptly cancelled on Monday following a dispute over the bridal feast, leading to the bride’s family calling off the marriage. The incident, which occurred in Tolatola village under Dharkhar Union, has since sparked widespread debate on social media.
The groom, Junaid Mia, a migrant worker based in Japan, arrived at the home of the bride, Rasheda Akter, daughter of Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, with a procession of 150 guests. While the groom initially expressed dissatisfaction upon his arrival regarding the floral arrangements, the situation escalated during the meal.
According to the bride’s father, the conflict arose when Junaid complained that a whole goat was not served as part of the special platter prepared for him and his relatives. Shafiqul Islam stated that he explained to the groom that a whole goat had not been requested beforehand and offered to serve one at a post-wedding event instead. The bride’s family alleged that the groom’s behavior turned confrontational, with Junaid even suggesting his brother take his place in the marriage, prompting the bride’s family to cancel the wedding and return all gifts and gold jewelry to the groom’s party.
Local Union Parishad member Ashik Mia corroborated the account, noting that the groom’s disrespectful behavior regarding the food prompted the bride’s father to end the engagement and send the groom’s party away.
However, Junaid Mia offered a different version of events in a social media post on Tuesday. He claimed that after the meal, the bride’s family demanded a dower—or kabin—ten times higher than the previously agreed amount. He alleged that when he and his family refused the demand, a heated argument ensued and the bride’s family ejected them from the venue.
Ujjal Mia, the groom’s brother, downplayed the incident, characterizing it as a misunderstanding and noting that the family left peacefully after the bride’s side refused to proceed with the ceremony.
