Man beaten to death over alleged motor pump theft in Rajbari Pangsas

A 35-year-old farmer was beaten to death by a mob in Pangsha, Rajbari, on Wednesday morning following allegations of stealing an electric water pump. The victim, identified as Joj Ali Biswas, a resident of Uttar Majhail village in Patta Union, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital shortly after the assault.
According to police, the incident occurred in Pachbaria village within the Kashbamajail Union. Local residents reportedly detained Biswas after accusing him of attempting to steal an electric motor pump from a rice mill owned by Karim Mondol.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pangsha Model Police Station, Sheikh Moinul Islam, stated that authorities received a report regarding the theft at approximately 5:00 a.m. The OC noted that he had instructed the callers not to take the law into their own hands and assured them that police were en route. However, by the time officers arrived, Biswas had already been severely beaten. Police assisted in transporting the victim to the Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead at 8:00 a.m.
The victim’s family has disputed the theft allegations. Mizan Biswas, the nephew of the deceased, alleged that his uncle was not involved in any criminal activity. He claimed the killing was a retaliatory act linked to long-standing territorial disputes between rival factions in the Patta and Kashbamajail unions.
Mizan Biswas further alleged that his uncle had been lured from his home under false pretenses by an acquaintance before being attacked. He noted that the area has a history of violent clashes, including a separate murder case involving another relative, Jamin Biswas, which occurred approximately one and a half months ago. He suggested that individuals recently released on bail in connection to that prior case were responsible for the attack on his uncle.
Police have confirmed that an investigation into the motive and the identities of the perpetrators is underway. Security has been tightened in the area, and police forces have been deployed to maintain order as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
