Four members of Kushtia family among nine killed in Kolkata hotel fire

KOLKATA — Four members of a family from Kushtia, Bangladesh, were among the nine people who perished in a massive fire at a residential hotel near New Market in Kolkata on Tuesday night.
The victims have been identified as Debashish Dutta, 39, his wife Afsana Sharmin, 27, their three-year-old son Shornoshish Dutta, and his father-in-law, Akram Hossain, 60. Debashish Dutta was a prominent journalist serving as the Kushtia correspondent for the daily newspaper Ajker Patrika and the private television channel Channel Nine, while also holding the position of executive editor at the local publication Ajker Alo.
The family had traveled to Bengaluru, India, approximately 15 days ago for medical treatment. They arrived in Kolkata from Bengaluru by flight on Monday night and checked into the hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street. They were scheduled to return to Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Dilip Dutta, the father of Debashish Dutta, confirmed that he received news of the tragedy on Wednesday morning after viewing photographs of his son’s remains on social media. According to the family, the couple had left their eight-year-old daughter, Fahima, in the care of relatives in Kushtia when they departed for India on August 3. The father-in-law, Akram Hossain, had joined them in India two days later.
The incident has caused profound grief in the victims’ hometown of Kushtia. Friends, colleagues, and neighbors gathered at the Dutta family residence throughout the day to offer condolences. Debashish’s mother, Swapna Dutta, remained inconsolable, struggling to process the loss of her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.
Local authorities in Kolkata reported that the fire broke out late Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of nine people, including children. The incident has prompted an outpouring of sorrow within the Bangladeshi media community, where Debashish Dutta was well-regarded for his professional contributions.
