Rangpur Police Transfer Quadruple Murder Case to Detective Branch for Further Investigation

The investigation into the murder of retired Rangpur Zila School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family has been transferred from the local police station to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police. The move is intended to facilitate a more comprehensive probe before the formal submission of a charge sheet.
Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Branch, confirmed the transfer on Tuesday. On Monday evening, the previous lead investigator, Inspector Milon Chatterjee of the Kotwali Police Station, formally handed over all case documents and relevant evidence to the new lead investigator, DB Inspector Jinnat Ali.
Following the transfer, both investigators visited the victims’ residence in the Mashuapara area. During the site visit, the former investigator briefed the new lead on the status of the evidence and the progress made in the case thus far. Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty stated that the transfer is a procedural step to ensure a thorough investigation, noting that while the defendants’ judicial confessions largely align with the narrative provided by the Police Commissioner, the suspects have also provided new information that requires further scrutiny.
The investigation follows the discovery of the bodies of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 25-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty, and their 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty. The victims were found at their Mashuapara residence last Saturday night, with police reporting that all four had been strangled.
Police apprehended two suspects, 23-year-old Mugdho Das and 19-year-old Siddhartha Das, in the early hours of Sunday. During a subsequent press briefing, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Mabud stated that the killings were allegedly motivated by a dispute over the suspects consuming Yaba, a methamphetamine-based drug, on the roof of the victims’ home. The two suspects provided confessional statements under Section 164 before a magistrate late Sunday night.
Ganapati Chakraborty had retired from his position in the accounting department of Rangpur Zila School in December 2024. He had been residing on the second floor of a three-story building he was constructing in Mashuapara at the time of his death. Following post-mortem examinations on Sunday, the remains of the four family members were released to their relatives, and funeral rites were conducted that same night.
