Patuakhali Science and Technology University suspends thirteen students for ragging freshman

Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) administration has taken disciplinary action against 13 students found guilty of ragging a first-year undergraduate. The decision was formalized in an office order signed by Registrar Jamal Hossain on Monday afternoon.
The sanctioned students, all second-year residents of the Bijoy-24 Hall, have been identified as Md. Asif Jahan, Priya Kumar Saha, Toufiq Hossain Ali, Manuyis Tajwar Mahi, Ashraful Islam, Sakib Hossain Majumder, Muminul Islam, Utsho Barman, Md. Nahim, Mohammad Mujahidul Islam, Jobayer Ahmed Limon, Md. Rajib Mia, and Rakshan Chandra Roy.
Under the disciplinary measures, the students face fines ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 BDT, suspensions from classes and dormitory privileges for periods spanning one semester to one year, and a mandatory requirement to sign a bond in the presence of their guardians. The university administration has issued a stern warning, stating that any further involvement in similar misconduct will result in permanent expulsion.
The action follows an investigation initiated after a formal complaint from a fresher enrolled in the Faculty of Law and Land Administration. On the night of August 19, the student, identified as Habib, was allegedly taken to the Bijoy-24 Hall common room, where he was subjected to physical and mental abuse. The victim initially sought treatment at the Dumki Upazila Health Complex, but his condition necessitated a transfer to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.
Following the complaint, the university formed a five-member probe committee led by Bijoy-24 Hall Provost Masudur Rahman. The committee, which was directed to submit its findings within three working days, confirmed that the accused students had planned, led, and participated in the ragging incident.
Registrar Jamal Hossain confirmed that the disciplinary sanctions are contingent upon compliance, noting that if the fines are not paid and the mandatory bonds are not submitted within the stipulated timeframe, the university will proceed with the immediate enforcement of the penalties.
