Police arrest Chandpur gold trader Pintu Das in Chittagong following disappearance with family

CHANDPUR — Police have apprehended Pintu Das, a 45-year-old gold trader from Chandpur, in Chittagong’s Patiya Upazila following his sudden disappearance with his family. Officers took Das into custody early Friday morning from the Dhalghat Daspara area and transferred him to the Chandpur Model Police Station for interrogation regarding the motives behind his flight.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Lutfur Rahman confirmed the arrest during a press briefing on Friday afternoon. Officials stated that Das, the proprietor of SK Jewellers and Shilpalay located in the Akhand Market on Comilla Road, had been missing from his rented residence in the Kalibari Temple area since August 19.
Investigations revealed that Das fled his home in the early hours of August 20, taking a significant portion of his household belongings. The landlord of the property, Russel Khan, filed a general diary with local police on August 22 after the family could not be located. Despite extensive searches conducted by police units across Chandpur and Comilla, authorities were initially unable to track his whereabouts.
Law enforcement eventually succeeded in locating Das by identifying and tracking the driver of the truck used to transport his family and belongings. During the briefing, Lutfur Rahman noted that while no formal criminal case has been registered against Das yet, three individuals have lodged complaints alleging that he misappropriated their mortgaged gold ornaments and cash.
Police are currently conducting an intensive interrogation to determine if Das’s departure was intended to defraud creditors or if there were ulterior motives, including potential attempts to disrupt communal harmony. A specialized team from the Dhaka police is expected to join the investigation by evening. Authorities have indicated that further legal actions will be determined once the initial inquiry is complete.
