Passenger injured as stone-throwing incident targets Coxs Bazar Express train

A passenger was injured after stones were thrown at a moving train in Chattogram on Saturday, prompting an emergency response from railway authorities and onboard medical professionals.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. aboard the Cox’s Bazar Express, which was traveling from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka. The victim, 39-year-old Shahin Ahmad, a resident of Dhaka’s Uttara area and a head assistant at the Uttara Income Tax Office, sustained a severe head injury when a rock struck him through an open window as the train passed through the Lohagara area.

Railway staff immediately attempted to provide first aid, but were unable to stem the bleeding. The situation became critical, forcing train officials to use the public address system to appeal for medical assistance from passengers. A senior surgeon and several other doctors traveling on the train responded to the call. After assessing the injury, the medical team recommended urgent hospital care.

In response to the emergency, railway authorities halted the train at Gomdandi Station in Boalkhali. Accompanied by his colleague, tax lawyer Nazrul Islam, the victim was transported to a local hospital where he received several stitches. The pair had been returning from Cox’s Bazar after participating in an anti-drug marathon held at Laboni Point. Following his treatment, Ahmad traveled to Dhaka by air the same day to continue his recovery.

Earlier that afternoon, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the same train was targeted in the Ramu-Islamabad area, resulting in a shattered carriage window. No injuries were reported in the earlier incident.

Patiya Railway Station Master Abdus Salam Bhuiyan confirmed the events and emphasized the urgent need for local authorities to take decisive action to curb the recurring trend of stone-throwing at moving trains. Despite the trauma, Ahmad reported that he is currently in stable condition.
