One dead and 55 rescued after severe weather sinks cargo vessel and fishing trawlers off Hatiya coast

One person is dead and 55 others have been rescued after a series of maritime accidents in the Bay of Bengal and the Meghna River on Wednesday, triggered by severe winds and adverse weather conditions near Hatiya in Noakhali.
The fatalities and rescues occurred in separate incidents throughout the day. The deceased, identified as 65-year-old Saber Ahmed, was a deckhand aboard a cargo vessel carrying salt. Ahmed, a resident of the Shikalbaha area in Chattogram, was declared dead upon arrival at the Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital.
The cargo vessel, MV Adnan, departed from Chattogram port early Wednesday carrying 11,000 maunds of salt destined for Narayanganj. According to Abdul Kader, finance secretary of the Chattogram Divisional Cargo Labor Union, the vessel’s engine failed near Thengar Char in the Meghna River. Subsequent heavy winds caused the vessel to capsize. Eight people on board were thrown into the water, all of whom were rescued by a passing fishing trawler. Seven survivors, including Faruk, Jafar, Delwar, and Tareq from Subornachar, Abdul Majid from Ramgati, Nurul Azam from Banshkhali, and Chobir Uddin from Khulna, were subsequently admitted to the hospital.
Separately, three fishing trawlers owned by Nasir Majhi, Jahir Majhi, and Jahed Majhi sank near Nijhum Dwip after being caught in a storm in the Bay of Bengal. Other fishing vessels operating in the area assisted in the rescue of the 48 crew members on board. Nishan Chowdhury, the owner of Jahir Majhi’s trawler, reported that two of the three vessels sank completely, but all crew members reached the shore safely.
Hatiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Russell Iqbal confirmed that multiple trawler sinkings occurred in the Nimtali and Chairman Ghat areas of Jahajmara. While these incidents resulted in significant property damage, officials reported no further loss of life. Authorities confirmed that the remaining individuals rescued from the various maritime incidents are currently in stable condition.
