Jubodal leader dies after altercation over street vending in Chittagong

A local youth leader affiliated with the Jubo Dal was killed in the port city of Chittagong following a dispute over the placement of street vendor carts, police and family members confirmed on Saturday.

The victim, Fazlul Amin, served as a joint convener of the East Sholoshahar ward unit of Jubo Dal. The incident occurred on Friday morning in the Omar Ali Matabbar Bari area under the Chandgaon Police Station jurisdiction, though reports of the fatality only emerged publicly on Saturday.

Family members of the deceased have filed a case at the Chandgaon Police Station naming local resident Mohammad Shahjahan and his son, Sifat, as suspects. Five to seven unidentified individuals were also included in the complaint.

According to local sources, the dispute stemmed from the operation of roadside hawkers in the Omar Ali Matabbar Bari area. Allegations suggest that Shahjahan facilitated the positioning of these vending carts, a practice that Fazlul Amin had reportedly opposed. This disagreement led to a long-standing tension between the two men.

Mohammad Shahed, general secretary of the Chittagong city unit of Jubo Dal, stated that Amin suffered from pre-existing heart conditions and asserted that the incident was rooted in a local dispute rather than political rivalry. Shahed noted that while the suspect claims an association with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the party is currently verifying whether he holds any legitimate membership, adding that individuals who commit crimes under the guise of political identity will face disciplinary action.

Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jasim Uddin confirmed that authorities have received reports of an altercation between Shahjahan and Amin regarding street vending on Friday morning. Preliminary information suggests Amin collapsed and died after being pushed during the confrontation.

Police have registered a case, though no arrests have been made as of Saturday. Investigators are now awaiting further findings to determine the precise cause of death.
