Former Jubo League leader hacked to death in Kishoreganj Bhairab

BHAIRAB, Bangladesh — A former local leader of the Jubo League, Al Amin, 40, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in the Tinpotti area of Bhairab town late Sunday night. The victim, who was a former general secretary of the Bhairab municipal unit of the Jubo League, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Monday.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Sunday as Al Amin was traveling home by motorcycle from his business, the Riverview residential hotel. According to investigators, the victim was ambushed by a group of attackers on a secluded road near his residence. He sustained multiple stab wounds, including critical head injuries and a severed leg tendon, leading to severe blood loss.

Local residents discovered the victim lying on the road in critical condition and initially transported him to a private hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at approximately 3:00 a.m.

Al Amin, son of Jasim Uddin from the Araibepari Bari area, was a prominent figure in local politics and commerce. Beyond his political affiliations, he served as a former councilor for Ward No. 1 and was a former director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Following the political transition on August 5, 2024, Al Amin had faced several legal cases and was recently released on bail after two separate periods of incarceration. He had reportedly been maintaining a low profile in recent months.

Tania Khanam, the victim’s wife, stated that her husband had contacted her at 11:40 p.m. to inform her that he was leaving his hotel and would be home shortly. She expressed confusion regarding the motive behind the attack and the identity of the perpetrators.

Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahabur Rahman confirmed the fatality and indicated that an investigation is underway. Police are currently working to identify the assailants, who fled the scene immediately after the assault.
